Sermon Response Guide

Guia del Sermon en Espanol

PRIMARY SCRIPTURE: 1 Timothy 1:3-11

Key Points

  • Not only is the world permeated with false teaching, but the church is, too.
  • Speaking the truth without love is equivalent to false teaching.
  • Jesus is the antidote to false teaching.

Memory Verse

Ask God to write this word on your heart this week:

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God.”
1 John 4:2-3a ESV

Questions for Reflection

Take time to reflect and respond to these questions on your own in the presence of the Holy Spirit, or with trusted friends or family members:

1: Read 1 John 4. Based on this chapter, how can you discern between true and false teaching?

2: What role does Jesus play in true and false teaching?

3: What role does love play in true and false teaching?

4: Read the entire first chapter of 1 Timothy. How have you swerved from the core person and purpose of Jesus and wandered away into fruitless, vain discussion and useless speculation lately?

5: What false teaching are you most tempted to believe these days? What is it about that false teaching that makes it so appealing?

6: If you embraced that false teaching, how would it affect your relationship with God? What about your relationship with people?

7: What truth have you found in Jesus that frees you from believing that false teaching?

Pray

Lord, we confess we have wandered away into talking about things that bring more death than life in Christ. We are quick to perpetuate speculation and slow to proclaim salvation. Father, forgive us. Holy Spirit, convict us of the false teachings we have believed to be true, and lead us into all truth in the name of Jesus. Expose the lies lurking in the darkness of our minds and free us to live in the light of your love.
