Sermon Response Guide

Guia del Sermon en Espanol

PRIMARY SCRIPTURE: 1 Timothy 4:6-16

6 If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. 7 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; 8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 9 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.
11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Key Points

  • Cooperation is central to life in Christ.
  • Jesus lived out cooperation in its purest form.
  •  Jesus invites us to cooperate with him and with others.
  • To choose to cooperate with others is to choose to love others.

Memory Verse

Ask God to write this word on your heart this week:

for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
-1 Timothy 4:8 ESV

Questions for Reflection

Take time to reflect and respond to these questions on your own in the presence of the Holy Spirit, or with trusted friends or family members:

1: What is the gospel?

2: Why is it worthwhile to train ourselves in the gospel? How do we train ourselves in the gospel?

3: Why is it worthwhile to train others in the gospel? How do we train others in the gospel?

4: What role does the gospel play in creating a culture of cooperation in an age of individualism?

5: Would you say you gravitate more toward cooperation or individualism? Why do you think that is?

6: Where do you crave cooperation in your own life? Where do you desire to see cooperation in the church?

7: How is God inviting you to contribute toward cooperation within our local faith family here at PCBC?*

*THIS WEEK:
Read 1 Corinthians 12 and:
1)    Take the Spiritual Gifts Discovery Assessment to discover what your spiritual gifts are for such a time as this.
2)    Use your gifts to serve God by serving with us at PCBC Serve at Church.

Pray

Lord, thank you for showing us not only who God is, but who you created us to be. Thank you for being the perfect example of cooperation between Father, Son, and Spirit. Thank you for adopting us as your very own sons and daughters in this constantly growing, diverse, and beautiful family of God. Thank you for entrusting to us the ministry of reconciliation you lived, suffered, died, and rose again for. Make us a people who actively pursue cooperation in the name of Jesus over and above the individualism we are so quick to wrap ourselves up in.
