Sermon Response Guide

Guia del Sermon en Espanol

PRIMARY SCRIPTURE:
John 14:1-10 ESV

1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

Questions for Reflection

Take time to reflect and respond to these questions on your own in the presence of the Holy Spirit, or with trusted friends or family members:

1: What has been troubling your heart this week?

  • What would it look like for you to trade those troubles for trust in God?
  • What do you know to be true of God that disempowers your present troubles?

2: What fruit does dwelling on our troubles produce in our lives?

  • Comparatively, what fruit does trusting in God produce in our lives?
  • Why is it often easier to be troubled than it is to believe (trust) God?

3: In John 14:1, what does the language of “let not” convey to you regarding that which troubles our hearts and our role in it all?

4: Read John 16:33 and answer the questions that follow.

  • How does this verse spoken by Jesus in John 16 relate to the words of Jesus in John 14?
  • Based on this verse, where do we find peace?
  • Based on this week, where have you gone looking for peace?

5: What is the primary truth God revealed to you today?

  • How will you respond?
  • Who do you know who you can encourage with the truth this week?

Pray

Lord, you are the way, the truth, and the life. When we are troubled, it can feel as though there is no way out. Thank you for always giving us a way out by your truth into the freedom and fullness of life you originally designed us to experience with you. Forgive us for settling for our own way, our own truth, and our own vision for what we often see as our own life. Thank you for gently leading us back to you and the beauty of belonging to you.
