Sermon Response Guide

Guia del Sermon en Espanol

PRIMARY SCRIPTURE:
Galatians 5:16-25 ESV

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

Key Points

  • Sin is choosing a way that leads to death.
  • Obedience is the pathway to freedom.
  • The gospel of Jesus is all about freedom.

Memory Verse

Ask God to write this word on your heart this week:
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
-Galatians 5:16 ESV

Questions for Reflection

Take time to reflect and respond to these questions on your own in the presence of the Holy Spirit, or with trusted friends or family members:

1: Review this week’s memory verse (Galatians 5:16).
· Why is it significant Paul writes, “walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh,” rather than, “walk by the Spirit and do not gratify the desires of the flesh?” What is the difference?
· What do you think it means to “walk by the Spirit,” or “keep in step with the Spirit?”
· What does the Holy Spirit of God (living within all who trust in Jesus) desire?

2: Take time to reflect on the fruit of the Spirit (characteristics produced by the Holy Spirit who marks us as followers of Christ). After reading the definitions of the fruit of the Spirit below, share how you recently experienced the Holy Spirit producing each fruit in your life.

· Love is serving someone else for the intrinsic value of who they are, not what they can do for us.
· Joy is delighting in God for who God is.
· Peace is confidence and trust in God’s power constantly at work in our lives.
· Patience is trusting in the forgiveness of God.
· Kindness is caring for the good of others with a generosity of spirit.
· Goodness is living a life of holistic integrity and sincerity.
· Faithfulness is being utterly committed to fulfilling our promises.
· Gentleness is approaching life from a posture of humility.
· Self-control is the ability to choose what is important rather than what is urgent.

3: Of all the definitions of the fruit of the Spirit listed above, which most enlightened you today, and why?

4: How is God inviting you to respond to what you heard and learned today?

Pray

Lord, thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit of the Living God, you are the one who leads us into all truth. You are the one who produces in us the characteristics of Christ. You are the one who gives us the desire and the power to do what we really want to do – what we were created by God and freed in Christ Jesus to do – that which pleases our Father in heaven. By your grace, Lord Jesus, help us to crucify our evil desires and keep in step with your Spirit – fully convinced wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
