Sermon Response Guide

Guia del Sermon en Espanol

PRIMARY SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 6:1-8

Key Points

  • God’s holiness is what sets God apart.
  • Holiness is not a part of God’s character, but the whole of who God is.
  • Every quality of God is wrapped in God’s holiness.
  • When we confess we are unholy, and believe God is holy, God makes us holy.

Memory Verse

Ask God to write this word on your heart this week:

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Psalm 51:17 ESV

Questions for Reflection

Take time to reflect and respond to these questions on your own in the presence of the Holy Spirit, or with trusted friends or family members:

1: What does it mean for God to be holy? What does it mean for you to be holy?

2: Notice how we say (above), “to be holy,” rather than “to look, act, sound, seem, or appear holy.” Based on Isaiah 6:1-8, why is holiness a state of being rather than doing?

3: Of all the words the seraphim could use to describe God, why do you think they center on, “Holy, holy, holy,” (Isaiah 6:3)?

4: Read and reflect on Isaiah 6:5. What is the Holy Spirit illuminating for you about Isaiah’s response to God’s holy presence?

5: Immediately after being purified by God’s holiness in Isaiah 6:7, Isaiah says, “And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me,’” (Isaiah 6:8). What is the relationship between these two events? In other words, what did God purifying Isaiah have to do with Isaiah hearing and responding to God’s call?

6: When was a time you personally heard and responded to the call of God? What about now? What seems to get in the way of you hearing and responding to God’s call these days?

7: In light of Isaiah’s experience in the Temple, how is the Holy Spirit prompting you to respond to God’s holy presence in your own life today?

Pray

Lord, you alone are holy, and we – alone – are not. Yet, just as you did for Isaiah, you promise if we confess our sins, you are faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Father God, forgive us. Wash us with the precious blood of your Son, Jesus. Clothe us with your Holy Spirit who makes us holy, because you are holy. Awaken us to who we are in you, Christ Jesus: temples of your Holy Spirit.
