Sermon Response Guide

Guia del Sermon en Espanol

PRIMARY SCRIPTURE: Acts 6:1-7

Key Points

  • Every disciple of Christ is:
    1)    a member of Christ’s Church
    2)    a minister of Christ’s Gospel
    3)    a missionary of Christ’s Kingdom
  • Most importantly, every disciple of Christ is a servant of Christ.

Memory Verse

Ask God to write this word on your heart this week:

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
Ephesians 4:11-12 ESV

Questions for Reflection

Take time to reflect and respond to these questions on your own in the presence of the Holy Spirit, or with trusted friends or family members:

1: The late Baptist preacher, Charles Spurgeon, said, “Every Christian here is either a missionary or an impostor… Recollect that. You either try to spread abroad the kingdom of Christ, or else you do not love him at all.”

What is your response to Spurgeon’s bold statement?

Why do you think Spurgeon equated love for Christ with global witness?

2: The late British missiologist, Lesslie Newbigin, wrote, “It is helpful to recall the distinction made earlier between mission as a dimension of the Church’s whole life, and mission as the primary intention of certain activities. Because the Church is the mission there is a missionary dimension of everything that the Church does.”

What do you think Newbigin meant when he wrote, “the Church is the mission?”

How does your understanding of church shift when you consider what “the Church does,” rather than who the church is? What does the church do?

3: If every disciple of Christ is a member of Christ’s Church, how are you participating in the body of Christ? In other words, who is walking with you as you walk with Jesus?

4: If every disciple of Christ is a minister of Christ’s Gospel, who are you serving the gospel to? In other words, what is your ministry?

5: If every disciple of Christ is a missionary of Christ’s Kingdom, where is your Kingdom witness spreading? In other words, where are you going with the good news of Jesus?

6: What gifts has the Holy Spirit entrusted to you for the building up of the body of Christ?

7: How is God spurring you on to serve with us at PCBC?

Fill out this form to let us know how God is leading you to serve with us as we join together in the work of God here at PCBC and beyond.*

*We specifically ask you to consider serving in our preschool and kids’ ministries at PCBC, as that is where we have the greatest need for disciples of Christ to step up and serve with us at this time.

Pray

Lord, thank you for setting us free and sending us out in your name above all names. We confess we have spent too much time giving our lives to other names or trying to make a name for ourselves. Show us the glory of your name – the only name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). Show us the power of your name – that in your name the nations will put their hope (Matthew 12:21). Show us how to live our lives for the glory of your name, in the power of your name, as we deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow you, Lord Jesus (Luke 9:23).
