The PCBC Constitution and Bylaws provides:

“In accordance with the meaning of the work and the practice in the New Testament, Deacons are to be servants of the Church. Their task is to serve with the Pastor and staff in performing the pastoral ministries task of (1) leading the Church in the defining and in the achieving of its mission, (2) proclaiming the gospel to believers and unbelievers, and (3) care for the Church’s members and other persons in the community.”

Biblical Direction Pertaining to Deacons:

One: Deacons are to be chosen from those who are “known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom” (Acts 6:3).  To be “full of the Spirit” means to be submitted to God’s Spirit and will. To be “full of wisdom” is to be a person who seeks and speaks God’s word and truth.

Two: Deacons are to be servants.  The word “deacon” is a translation of the Greek word for “servant.”  The first deacons were chosen to help meet the needs of widows in the early church (Acts 6:1-6). Deacons at Park Cities Baptist Church are servant leaders whose primary responsibility is to meet the needs of the body of Christ.

Three: Deacons are to be people of integrity. God’s word describes them as “worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons. (1 Timothy 3: 8-10) A deacon’s character is to serve as a model of Christian commitment for the congregation and the community.

The servant role of deacon is not to be sought for personal honor, but is to be viewed as a call to greater commitment to service. The desire and willingness to live the life of a servant is a critical qualification for deacon selection.
