Search Committee Update (06/02/09)

Dear Church family,

I am pleased to provide another important update as we move through a time of transition together in faith and hope in the goodness and provision of the Lord.

As I reported to you previously, a Nominating Committee has been at work to recommend a group of people to you to be elected as our Senior Pastor Search Committee. That nominating committee approached their work with great diligence and prayer as they sought out godly, discerning and prayerful people to serve on the search committee. After multiple meetings and much prayer and discussion, the Nominating Committee has unanimously recommended a group of outstanding people to serve on the search committee.

We all owe a great debt of gratitude to the members of the Nominating Committee for their faithful service. The committee consisted of Bob Brooks, Brian Hamilton, Fred Pendleton, Elizabeth Mills, Carla Robinson, Becky Shewchuk and myself. There were so many wonderful and godly people in our congregation we could have selected; however, the following people are the ones we were led to select:

  • Barry Pryor, Chair
  • Deborah Sutton, Vice-Chair
  • Laura Dronzek
  • Hilton Hemphill
  • Mike Mason
  • Mike McCullough, Jr.
  • Debbie Price
  • Larry Richardson
  • Scott Robinson
  • Carol Strong
  • Mary Stuart
  • Stephanie White
  • David Harper, ex officio with the proviso that he will remain on the committee through the conclusion of its work even if extends beyond his term as Trustee President

At their May meeting, the deacons overwhelmingly voted to recommend this group to the church for election as the search committee for a new senior pastor. Their recommendation will be presented at the upcoming church in conference on June 7th so that the search committee can begin its important work. More information about these individuals will be posted on the church's website and will be distributed on Sunday, June 7th. I hope you will come to that church in conference to affirm these brothers and sisters in their commissioning and work as our representatives to find the one God is preparing even now to come serve the Lord among us.

The Transition Committee also continues to do its work. A number of excellent teachers have been arranged to speak in the Sanctuary and the Great Hall this summer. (A complete list is posted on the church's website.) We have also planned a special prayer service on Sunday, June 14th to pray for God's blessing and protection on the church and for His leadership of the search committee. More about this service will be announced very soon. The Transition Committee also is prayerfully moving toward identifying an interim preacher for the church to preach on a more regular basis. We have heard many who attend the Sanctuary services express their desire for this and are working to address it.

I encourage you to continue to pray for God's direction of His church and His encouragement and protection of all our staff and other leaders. Our staff is working very hard to help grow us more fully into the image of Jesus Christ and greatly deserve this support from us.

Thank you for your continued faithfulness to the Lord and to His church. Let us all follow the Lord humbly together as He grows us and His kingdom.

In Christ's love,
David H. Harper
